HAL - Mrs. Debbie Miller
Background
Welcome to the High Ability Learners classroom! This year marks my 20th year of teaching at SVdP. I have been the High Ability Learners teacher for the last 17 years and previously taught 6th grade for 3 years. I earned a bachelor's degree in Intermediate Education from UNO and a master's degree from UNK in Gifted Education. My goal as a teacher is to give your child the tools to discover his/her talents and continue to grow as a learner and child of God.
Class Info
The HAL classroom provides students additional challenge in math and reading/writing. Students go through an initial evaluation process in late spring using multiple pieces of criteria including standardized tests, grade-level achievement tests, classroom performance, and teacher recommendations. The HAL Math program begins in 4th grade and the students work one grade level ahead of their classmates. By the time HAL Math students are in 8th grade, they will complete an advanced Algebra 2 class.

The HAL Reading/Literature program starts in 5th grade and focuses on discussion of literary topics and writing while creating connections to real life. Writing is an integral part of the program in addition to a student's reading ability, so a student should also possess strong writing skills in addition to a love for reading. The students read a variety of novels from different genres and complete a culminating project at the end of their book. It is important to have a love for reading, but also be an organized and independent thinker/writer.
HAL placement is always provisional, and HAL students are re-evaluated at every grading period for continuation in the program. Each program is fluid to meet the changing academic or emotional needs of a student, so changes may sometimes occur during the school year. Most importantly, communication between home and school is essential to having the best outcome for all.
