Music - PK-8

Welcome to Mrs. LeMense's Gr. PK-5 Music Classes!

Background
Hello, I’m Karen LeMense, the music teacher for the Pk-5th grade students. I also prepare our school liturgies and provide the music for our celebrations. I am in my 8th year here at SVdP and have loved every minute! I have a bachelor degree in Elementary Education from the University of Iowa with an emphasis in Music. I finished my music coursework at UNO and have studied Kodaly more in-depth. I’ve taught for the Archdiocese of Omaha for a number of years, previously serving as music teacher for St. Margaret Mary School, St. Joan of Arc School, and St. Gerald School.

Class Info
Our students in grades K-5 have music class twice each week. Students learn and build upon their understanding through demonstration of the elements of music (i.e. form, melody, rhythm, meter, tempo, etc.) as well as learning to read the notes on the staff, understanding classical music concepts and repertoire, recognizing different musical genres, and even trying their hand at composing. We sing and dance, as well as play classroom musical instruments—including recorders and ukulele. Every student, PK–8th grade, has an opportunity to be in a performance each year.
(
Our school subscribes to the archdiocesan program, Music In Catholic Schools, to head up our band program for grades 5-8 with Mr. Chris Frisbie.)

Welcome to Ms. Campbell's 6th-8th Music Classes

Background

Hello, My name is Ms. Campbell, and I am the 6-8 Music Teacher here at SVdP! This will be my 1st full year teaching. Previously, I was a long term substitute here at the end of the 24/25 school year, and I feel blessed to be back! Outside of SVdP, I teach private voice and piano lessons, and am a section leader for St. Cecilia’s Cathedral Choir. I hold a Bachelor of Music in Music Education K-12 from the University of Nebraska-Omaha. My educational philosophy is that through music education, students gain skills in critical thinking, collaboration, discipline, and creativity. My ultimate goal is for students to have a lifelong love and appreciation for music.

Class Info

Throughout the year, I will be following the Archdiocese and Quaver music’s standards for 6-8 Music. This includes analyzing, reading, performing, playing, singing, evaluating, and creating both sacred and secular music.

At the beginning of the year, 6th grade students will be able to differentiate various music genres and forms, as well as prepare music for their November concert. During the second semester, students will explore the science of sound, animation scoring, and how to put together a performance.

7th grade students will rehearse for their October program and dive deeper into music history, which includes music eras and composers. Later in the school year, they will have a music technology unit.

8th grade students will be rehearsing for the October concert and perform with the 7th grader students. Afterwards, they will explore different styles of music, including jazz, rock, and hip hop. In the spring, we will be doing units on music careers and playing the guitar.

All students will also get the chance to audition for the school play. Auditions will be held in December, and the performances will be held in March. All student materials will be posted in Google Classroom, and their grades will be posted in PowerSchool.
